Young Guns
Normally when I head off for a race weekend, I am excited, honored, thrilled and filled with adrenaline to cover the top tiers of motorsport. It’s fun because you know these drivers are the best on the planet at what they do. I’ve walked around NASCAR Sprint Cup garages, had breakfast with Formula One drivers, shared laughs with multiple Le Mans winning drivers and set foot in pretty much every paddock and pit area known to motorsport. But this past weekend, instead of focusi

Pictures of the Year 2012
What an incredible and completely wild ride 2012 has been. Where do I even begin to sum it all up? Four Indycar races; Two Grand Am races; Three NASCAR races; Two ALMS races; Four days of Formula One testing in Barcelona; the inaugural United States Grand Prix in Austin; the 24 Hours of Le Mans; a two week trip to England covering five racing series at three different tracks; the Kentucky Derby; 12 days in Colorado for Pikes Peak International Hill Climb; the Harry Miller Clu

Like Marbles Spinning ’round a Fishbowl
That was the analogy I heard this weekend that best describes Indycar running on high banked ovals. And that was the case for the 2012 Indycar series finale held at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The cars reached incredible speeds near 220mph, and the whole show became something more similar to Star Wars pod racing than open wheel car racing. As the sun dipped low in the sky, the Indycar season waved the green flag one more time in 2012. Championship leader Will P

Back to the Inner Harbor
The clock is winding down the last few minutes of qualifying. I’m standing on the outside of a fairly tight 90 degree turn that is so typical of city street circuits, like this one in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. My left elbow and thigh are just barely touching the concrete barrier separating me from the race track. My 400mm lens and Nikon body pressed to my left eye, while my right eye is wide open watching for anything I can’t see through the narrow field of view in the ca

Racing in Wine Country
I’m standing on the outside of turn 8, a fast tremendously fast complex of corners that pushes the car to it’s aerodynamic limits. The DW12 Indycar chassis is literally dancing through this spot on the brown and dusty Sonoma raceway. Ryan Briscoe is hitting nearly 140 miles per hour through it as he throws the wheel left then right. I’ve seen a lot of car racing around the world, but rarely have I seen something as spectacular as that section of track and those cars on the li

Vintage with a capital “V”
Le Mans legend Hurley Haywood pushes the oil pump a few times on the 1923 Miller Grand Prix car. I am packed into a space that most small children would not squeeze into with one arm around Hurley’s shoulder and the other on my camera. Eventually, with five of Brumos Racing’s strongest men pushing us toward the track, Hurley cranks the engine and we rumble toward the end of the pit lane. Hurley floors it….and the car feels like it hasn’t spent a single day off the race track

The Augusta National of Race Tracks
Barber Motorsports Park, right on the outskirts of Birmingham Alabama, is a giant garden with flowers, manicured shrubs, sculptures and rose bushes almost as far as the eye can see. But smack in the middle of this fantastic utopia lies a race track that boasts some of the most rolling terrain of any circuit in the United States. With a Laguna Seca style corkscrew, a few fast sweeping turns and one or two passing opportunities, Barber makes for tough work on car and driver. A

Indycar on the Streets of Baltimore
The Indycar Grand Prix wrapped up an eventful weekend on the streets of Baltimore on a hot Sunday afternoon. With vendors selling delicious local crab cakes and cold beer, the ethanol powered cars revved up their engines one more time for the weekend’s racing finale. Penske’s Will Power dominated the brand new street circuit with ease despite a lengthy yellow flag period. Racing will return to Baltimore next September, but in the mean time, enjoy these unique images from a fu

American Le Mans Roars around Baltimore
My last adventure with the American Le Mans and Indycar circuit was a much different one to what was running in Baltimore this past weekend. The mid-atlantic city has been mired in a traffic nightmare with construction efforts underway for months, all in preparation for a weekend of racing the likes of which the city has never seen before. Despite some very serious and frustrating growing pains early on in the weekend, Baltimore can be proud of their weekend in the racing lim
